Single-hose or dual-hose?
Always pick dual-hose if you can. A single-hose unit pulls air out of the room and creates negative pressure, which sucks warm outdoor air in through every gap. Dual-hose pulls condenser air from outside and exhausts it back outside, no warm-air re-infiltration.
What does 'SACC' BTU mean?
SACC (Seasonally Adjusted Cooling Capacity) is the DOE's real-world rating, replacing the inflated ASHRAE number. A 14,000 BTU ASHRAE unit usually has ~9,500 BTU SACC. Buy on SACC.
How much does a portable AC cost to run?
Roughly $0.13–$0.22 per hour at typical US rates ($0.16/kWh). Inverter dual-hose units land at the low end; older single-hose at the high end.
Can I leave it on all summer?
Yes, but if you need 24/7 cooling for a whole apartment, a window unit or a mini-split will be cheaper to run within 1–2 seasons.
