Evergy Baseline Allowance Explained

How Evergy's baseline allowance works. Understand how your baseline is calculated, what affects your tier, and how to stay within the lowest-cost usage tier.

What Is a Baseline Allowance?

Your Evergy baseline allowance is the amount of electricity the utility considers necessary for essential residential use. It's set by your state's public utility commission and varies by climate zone, season, and whether you have electric heating. Usage within your baseline is billed at the lowest tier rate, making it the most affordable portion of your electricity consumption.

How Your Baseline Is Calculated

Evergy calculates your baseline based on your geographic climate zone, the time of year, and your heating source. Summer baselines are typically higher than winter baselines in hot climates due to air conditioning needs. If you have all-electric heating, you may receive a higher winter baseline. Your baseline amount is shown on your bill each month.

Staying Within Your Baseline

Keeping your usage within the baseline allowance means paying the lowest rate per kWh. Monitor your daily usage through Evergy's online portal or app. Energy-efficient appliances, LED lighting, proper insulation, and smart thermostat use can help you stay within your baseline. If you consistently exceed it, consider whether a time-of-use plan might save you more.

Impact on Your Bill

When you exceed your baseline allowance, each additional kWh costs more. In tiered rate structures, Tier 2 rates can be 30-50% higher than Tier 1, and Tier 3 rates even more. Understanding your baseline helps you predict your bill and make informed decisions about energy use throughout the month.
