TECO Energy TDU Charges Explained

Understanding Transmission and Distribution Utility (TDU) charges on your TECO Energy bill. Learn what TDU charges cover and why they're separate from your energy rate.

What Are TDU Charges?

TDU (Transmission and Distribution Utility) charges on your TECO Energy bill cover the cost of physically delivering electricity to your home through power lines, transformers, and meters. In deregulated markets, these charges are separate from your energy supply charges and are set by the regulated utility (the TDU), not your retail electricity provider.

TDU Charge Components

TDU charges typically include a fixed monthly customer charge ($5-$15), a per-kWh delivery charge, and various riders for system improvements, storm restoration, and energy efficiency programs. The per-kWh delivery charge is usually $0.03-$0.06/kWh. These charges are the same regardless of which retail electricity provider you choose.

Why TDU Charges Matter

TDU charges can represent 30-40% of your total electricity bill. When comparing electricity plans, many advertised rates don't include TDU charges, making plans appear cheaper than they actually are. Always compare the total cost including TDU charges, not just the energy rate. The Electricity Facts Label (EFL) includes TDU charges in the total price.

TDU Rate Changes

TDU rates change periodically as utilities file rate cases with the state commission. These changes affect all customers in the TDU's service area regardless of their retail provider. TECO Energy's TDU rate changes are typically announced in advance and take effect on a specific date. Your retail provider will reflect these changes on your next bill.
