Understanding TECO Energy TDU Delivery Charges

A guide to understanding TDU delivery charges on your TECO Energy electricity bill. Learn how delivery fees are structured and what you're paying for.

Delivery vs. Supply Charges

Your TECO Energy electricity bill has two main components: supply charges (the cost of generating electricity) and delivery charges (the cost of transporting it to your home). In deregulated markets, you can shop for supply but delivery charges are fixed by the regulated TDU. Understanding this split is essential for accurately comparing electricity plans.

What Delivery Charges Cover

TECO Energy's delivery charges fund the maintenance and expansion of local power lines, substations, transformers, and meters. They also cover tree trimming near power lines, storm damage restoration, smart meter infrastructure, and customer service operations. These costs are shared among all customers in the service territory.

Fixed vs. Variable Delivery Fees

Delivery charges include both fixed components (monthly customer charge, typically $5-$15) and variable components (per-kWh delivery rate). The fixed charge covers the cost of maintaining your connection regardless of usage. The variable charge scales with your consumption. Even with zero usage, you'll still pay the fixed delivery charge.

Delivery Charge Trends

TDU delivery charges have been increasing as utilities invest in grid modernization, smart meters, and storm hardening. These investments improve reliability but increase costs. TECO Energy's delivery charges are reviewed during rate cases where the utility must justify its spending. You can participate in rate case proceedings to voice concerns about delivery charge increases.
