Tennessee Electricity Rates: TVA's Low-Cost Power Explained

Tennessee residents enjoy some of the lowest electricity rates in the United States, thanks to the Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA) - a unique federal power agency that provides wholesale electricity to local utilities.

How TVA Works

Unlike most states where investor-owned utilities generate and sell power, Tennessee's electricity comes from TVA, which sells wholesale power to:

  • Municipal utilities (like Nashville Electric Service)
  • Electric cooperatives (like Middle Tennessee EMC)
  • Local power companies (like EPB in Chattanooga)

This structure eliminates profit margins at the generation level, keeping rates low.

Major Tennessee Utilities

Nashville Electric Service (NES)

Serves approximately 400,000 customers in the Nashville area.

  • Average rate: ~10.5 cents per kWh
  • Municipal utility - no profit motive

Memphis Light, Gas and Water (MLGW)

Serves approximately 420,000 electric customers.

  • Average rate: ~10.2 cents per kWh
  • Largest three-service municipal utility in the US

EPB (Chattanooga)

Serves approximately 180,000 customers.

  • Average rate: ~10.8 cents per kWh
  • Famous for gigabit internet service

Knoxville Utilities Board (KUB)

Serves approximately 200,000 electric customers.

  • Average rate: ~10.4 cents per kWh
  • Municipal utility

Why Tennessee Rates Are Low

  1. TVA's diverse generation - hydro, nuclear, natural gas, solar
  2. No shareholder profits at the wholesale level
  3. Economies of scale - TVA serves 10 million people
  4. Federal backing - lower borrowing costs
  5. Abundant hydropower - dams built in the 1930s-40s

Tennessee Energy Assistance

  • LIHEAP through Tennessee Housing Development Agency
  • TVA's EnergyRight efficiency programs
  • Local utility payment plans
  • Weatherization Assistance Program

Tips for Tennessee Residents

  1. Appreciate your low rates - among the lowest in the nation
  2. Still focus on efficiency - savings add up
  3. Explore TVA's solar programs - Green Power Providers
  4. Take advantage of EnergyRight rebates and audits
