APS Gas Supply Charge Explained

Understanding the gas supply charge on your APS natural gas bill. Learn how gas commodity costs work and what drives price changes.

What Is the Gas Supply Charge?

The gas supply charge on your APS bill covers the cost of purchasing natural gas on the wholesale market. This is separate from the delivery charge, which covers the cost of transporting gas through pipelines to your home. The gas supply charge fluctuates based on wholesale natural gas market prices and is typically the largest component of your bill.

Market Price Factors

Natural gas prices are influenced by supply and demand, weather patterns, storage levels, and production costs. Cold winters increase demand for heating, driving prices up. Mild weather and abundant supply push prices down. APS purchases gas through a mix of long-term contracts and spot market purchases to balance cost stability with market responsiveness.

Fixed vs. Variable Gas Supply

In deregulated gas markets, you may be able to choose a competitive gas supplier offering fixed-rate plans that lock in your gas supply cost. APS's default supply rate changes monthly based on market conditions. Fixed-rate plans provide price certainty but may cost more than the default rate during periods of low gas prices.

Reducing Gas Supply Costs

The most effective way to reduce gas supply charges is to reduce your natural gas consumption. Upgrade to a high-efficiency furnace, improve insulation, seal air leaks, and lower your thermostat. A programmable thermostat can reduce heating costs by 10-15%. Water heater insulation and low-flow fixtures also reduce gas usage.
