DTE Energy Fuel Adjustment Charge

Understanding the fuel adjustment charge on your DTE Energy bill. Learn why fuel costs fluctuate, how they're passed to customers, and their impact on your bill.

What Is the Fuel Adjustment?

The fuel adjustment charge on your DTE Energy bill reflects changes in the cost of fuel used to generate electricity. When natural gas, coal, or other fuel prices rise or fall, DTE Energy passes these cost changes directly to customers. This charge fluctuates monthly based on actual fuel market prices, which is why your bill can vary even when your usage stays the same.

How Fuel Costs Are Calculated

DTE Energy calculates the fuel adjustment by comparing actual fuel costs to the base fuel cost already included in your standard rate. If fuel costs exceed the base amount, you'll see a positive fuel adjustment (additional charge). If fuel costs are below the base, you may see a credit. The calculation is reviewed and approved by your state's utility commission.

Impact on Your Bill

Fuel adjustment charges can add or subtract 10-30% from your base energy charges depending on market conditions. During periods of high natural gas prices, fuel adjustments can significantly increase your bill. Conversely, when fuel prices drop, you may see lower-than-expected bills. This charge applies equally to all DTE Energy customers on the same rate plan.

Reducing Fuel Cost Impact

While you can't control fuel prices, reducing your overall electricity consumption reduces the total fuel adjustment on your bill since it's calculated per kWh. Energy efficiency improvements, solar panels, and shifting usage to off-peak hours (if on a TOU plan) all help minimize the impact of fuel cost fluctuations on your DTE Energy bill.
