Demand charges on your Entergy bill are based on your highest rate of electricity consumption (measured in kilowatts, kW) during a billing period, not your total usage. They reflect the cost of maintaining enough generation and grid capacity to serve your peak needs. Demand charges are most common on commercial and industrial rate plans but some residential plans include them.
Entergy measures your demand in 15-minute intervals throughout the billing period. Your demand charge is based on the single highest 15-minute average during the month. This means one brief period of high usage — like starting multiple large appliances simultaneously — can set your demand charge for the entire month.
Stagger the startup of large equipment and appliances to avoid simultaneous peaks. Use energy management systems to limit maximum demand. Consider battery storage to shave peak demand. For commercial customers, demand charges can represent 30-50% of the total bill, making demand management one of the most impactful cost reduction strategies.
Energy charges (per kWh) measure total consumption over time, while demand charges (per kW) measure your peak instantaneous draw. Two customers can use the same total kWh but have very different demand charges based on when and how they use electricity. Flattening your usage profile reduces demand charges without reducing total consumption.
