Pepco uses several types of meters: traditional analog meters with spinning dials, digital meters with LCD displays, and smart meters that communicate readings automatically. Smart meters are the most common in newer installations and provide detailed usage data in 15-minute or hourly intervals. Your meter type determines how your usage is recorded and reported.
For analog meters, read the dials from left to right, recording the lower number when the pointer is between two digits. For digital meters, simply read the displayed number. Smart meters transmit readings automatically, but you can still read the display to verify. Subtract last month's reading from the current reading to calculate your usage in kWh.
Pepco's smart meters provide real-time usage data through online portals and mobile apps. You can track daily and hourly consumption patterns, identify energy-wasting appliances, and optimize your usage for time-of-use rate plans. Smart meters also enable faster outage detection and remote service connections.
Compare the meter reading on your Pepco bill to your actual meter. If there's a discrepancy, note the date and reading, take a photo, and contact Pepco. Discrepancies can indicate estimated reads, meter malfunctions, or billing errors. You have the right to request a meter accuracy test, which Pepco must perform within a reasonable timeframe.
