NV Energy Estimated Meter Readings

What happens when NV Energy estimates your meter reading. Understand estimated bills, how they're calculated, and what to do if your estimate seems wrong.

Why Meters Get Estimated

NV Energy may estimate your meter reading if the meter reader cannot access your meter due to locked gates, dogs, construction, or severe weather. Smart meters have reduced estimated reads significantly, but they can still occur during communication outages or meter malfunctions. Your bill will indicate whether the reading was actual or estimated.

How Estimates Are Calculated

Estimated readings are based on your historical usage patterns, typically comparing the same period from the previous year and adjusting for weather. While estimates are usually reasonably accurate, they can be significantly off if your usage patterns have changed — for example, if you've added a pool, started working from home, or installed solar panels.

True-Up on Next Actual Read

When NV Energy obtains the next actual meter reading, the difference between the estimated and actual usage is reconciled. This can result in a surprisingly high or low bill. If you receive multiple estimated reads in a row, the true-up adjustment can be substantial. Contact NV Energy to request an actual reading if you've received consecutive estimates.

Disputing an Estimated Bill

If your estimated bill seems too high, you can submit your own meter reading to NV Energy through their website or app. Take a photo of your meter for documentation. If the discrepancy is significant, request a meter test to verify your meter is functioning correctly. NV Energy is required to adjust your bill if the estimate was materially inaccurate.
