SCE Time-of-Use Pricing

How SCE time-of-use electricity pricing works. Understand peak, mid-peak, and off-peak hours and calculate potential savings from TOU rates.

TOU Pricing Basics

SCE's time-of-use pricing charges different rates depending on when you use electricity. Peak hours (typically 2-8 PM weekdays) have the highest rates because grid demand is greatest. Off-peak hours (nights, weekends, holidays) have the lowest rates. Mid-peak hours fall in between. The rate differential between peak and off-peak can be 2-3x.

Peak and Off-Peak Schedules

SCE's specific peak and off-peak hours vary by season and rate plan. Summer peak hours are typically longer and more expensive than winter peak hours due to air conditioning demand. Weekends and major holidays are usually off-peak all day. Check your specific SCE TOU plan for exact hour definitions — they differ from utility to utility.

Calculating TOU Savings

To estimate TOU savings, analyze your hourly usage data (available through SCE's smart meter portal). Calculate what you'd pay under your current flat rate vs. the TOU rate. If you can shift 40-60% of usage to off-peak hours, you'll likely save 10-20%. The biggest savings come from running AC, laundry, dishwashers, and EV charging during off-peak hours.

TOU Tips and Strategies

Pre-cool your home before peak hours begin. Use timers and smart plugs to automate appliance scheduling. Charge EVs overnight during the cheapest hours. Cook with microwave or slow cooker instead of the oven during peak hours. If you have solar panels, TOU rates maximize the value of your daytime generation by offsetting the most expensive peak-hour electricity.
