Sometimes Tampa Electric can't access your meter to get an actual reading. When this happens, they estimate your usage based on historical patterns.
Why Estimates Happen
Common reasons for estimated reads include:
- Severe weather: Hurricanes, tropical storms, or flooding may prevent meter access
- Access issues: Locked gates, aggressive dogs, or overgrown vegetation
- Meter problems: Damaged or malfunctioning meters
- Smart meter communication: Temporary signal issues with AMI meters
How TECO Estimates Usage
TECO uses your historical usage patterns to estimate:
- Same month from previous year
- Average of recent months
- Weather-adjusted calculations
Most estimates are reasonably accurate, but they can be off — especially if your usage patterns have changed significantly.
Identifying Estimated Reads
Your bill will indicate if the reading was estimated:
- Look for "EST" or "Estimated" near the meter reading
- The bill may include a note explaining why
- Smart meter customers can check the TECO app for actual readings
What to Do About Estimated Reads
Automatic True-Up: When TECO gets the next actual reading, they'll automatically adjust your bill. If the estimate was too high, you'll get a credit. If too low, you'll owe the difference.
Requesting an Actual Read: If you believe the estimate is significantly wrong, you can:
- Read your meter yourself and call TECO with the reading
- Request a special meter reading (may incur a fee)
- Submit a photo of your meter through the TECO app
